and traditions explained. We are sure you will find them as great

Five-Fold Happiness: Chinese Concepts
of Luck, Prosperity, Longevity, Happiness, and Wealth (Hardcover)
From Library Journal
Graphic designer Sung's book belongs to the relatively
new class of small, sensuously crafted books meant to be pleasing
to the hand and eye as well as to the mind. Her contribution to
the genre takes for its subject the Chinese concepts of luck,
prosperity, happiness, and wealth: she discusses each concept,
as well as the varied legends that surround them, in Chinese and
English; for each symbol of each concept there are pictograms,
photographs, and other illustrations. Sung's distinctive way with
design is evident from the delightful, brilliantly red and yellow
pages. Her writing is clear and engaging; her subject is too-little
understood in the West. Highly recommended for all collections.
Book Description
Surround yourself with lucky objects, the Chinese believe, and
good fortune will come to you. In word and image, this exquisite
volume-a delight to hold in the hand-explores the bounteous meanings
of the five-fold symbols of happiness: luck, prosperity, longevity,
happiness, and wealth. Drenched in color and lavishly illustrated
from ancient and modern sources, Five-Fold Happiness interweaves
both Chinese and English text. Peaches, the number eight, the
imperial color of gold, a cat with one paw beckoning, or the dragon
dance-here are some of the familiar images now revealed in their
rich significance. Whether readers choose to embrace these symbols
in their everyday lives or simply enjoy them on these glorious
pages, Five-Fold Happiness is altogether auspicious.
Review: I've bought 8 copies already!
I'm 2nd generation Chinese-American, and this book is like an
encyclopedia to my heritage! I've bought copies for all of my
2nd generation friends. My sisters are using this book to help
them teach their children about these fundamental principles of
Chinese culture, which otherwise may have been forgotten. Another
Chinese-American friend of mine (who grew up in Taiwan) said that
she learned so much from this book; many of the Chinese idioms
she heard all of her life are now explained, with great accuracy
in context and origin. Even my parents (who are from China) were
impressed with this book's comprehensive coverage and accuracy.
It is also aesthetically striking, from the beautiful cover, to
the photos and drawings on nearly every page which complements
the storytelling perfectly. What an amazing compilation!
Review: Symbols
explained in context
Ever look at the art around your favorite Chinese restaurant and
the designs on the plates, and wonder if they have a hidden meaning?
They do. And Five-Fold Happiness beautifully shows and clearly
explains it all. What a reference! Read this, and dazzle your
friends with your insights next time you go out for lo mein.
Review: Little
Chinese Book of Culture
I picked up this book and found that many of the items in it are
related to Feng Shui symbols and its origin. It's meant to give
beginners a glimpse into the Chinese culture. It's bilingual with
Chinese on one side and the English translation on the other side.
The pictures are nice. I recommend it for beginners, but it is
also a nice coffee table book.
Review: Very
nicely done.
I just bought this book and I could not stop reading it. Very
very good. Well done, Vivien.
Review: A Beautifully
Written and Knowledgable Book
I bought this book without the slightest beginning knowledge of
Chinese culture or history. I just thought it looked interesting.
Now, I can tell anyone who is interested in this type of book
that it was wonderfully illustrated, extremely easy to understand
and intensely knowledgeable and helpful. I am in awe of all the
"little" things about Chinese history and culture, and
this book goes thoroughly through all of it's promised categories
with ease of understanding and helpful information.
This is a quick reading book, but is also a very helpful reference
tool. I now know what not to give/not give as a gift, and I even
know why! It is helpful in what to surround yourself with or others,
your home, business, gift giving or for different types of lifestyles
or happenings. Five-fold Happiness is a great gift for anyone
of any age, or a wonderful read for yourself. I think that anyone
who begins this book will finish it over and over again.
Enjoy and Learn!
Good Luck Life : The Essential Guide to Chinese American
Celebrations and Culture (Paperback)
Review: Fascinating and fun to read!
A treasure chest...and a treasure, Good Luck Life is a compelling
collection that's as fun to read as it is fascinating.
You'll discover:
*Rosemary Gong's graceful poetry and memories of Chinese-American
celebrations
* Legends and lore---secrets and significance---facts and history-to
define each holiday
* Recipes and check lists for creating your own authentic Chinese-American
occasion
My son and his Chinese-American wife just had
a baby. Thanks to Good Luck Life, this Italian-American grandmother
is already planning a Red Egg and Ginger Party to welcome her
first grandchild! Starting from almost no knowledge about Chinese-American
traditions, I was delighted to discover this rich resource; you
will be, too!
Review: You don't
have to be Chinese-American to love this book!
It's packed with information, from practical tips on what to do
when you're invited to a Chinese-American wedding to how to get
better service in a Chinese restaurant. Great stories and legends,
too -- the book will make you far more aware of the depth of this
fascinating culture. Highly recommended.
Review: A Chinese
cultural treasure chest
I am not Chinese at all. However, I did fall in love with Asian
culture many years ago. I spend a lot of time in Chinatown when
I visit San Francisco and I cook a lot of different Asian cuisines.
I've always been curious about the Chinese customs and celebrations
- but never knew where to look for information. Finally, someone
wrote a book that even non-Chinese can understand and appreciate!
Good Luck Life is an easy and pleasant read.
It covers traditions that I am familiar with, such as Chinese
New Year, to celebrations that I have never heard of like the
Red Egg and Ginger Parties. Rosemary Gong packs this book chock
full of legends, recipes, superstitions and even guidelines for
planning your own events. I especially enjoyed reading the chapter
on Chinese table etiquette.
This is a nice glimpse for anyone who would
like to learn more about Chinese American beliefs.
Review: A trip down
memory lane..
She's put everything in this book that I remember about growing
up American Chinese. Many of the traditions that we practiced
were described in detail. She wrote down the meanings behind each
one and filled in all the blanks that my family couldn't.
From festivals, red egg and ginger parties,
birthdays, weddings, funerals and all the little tidbits in between,
it's in this book. Why we had to give offerings to the keeper
at the entrance to the cemetary and why we had to wear all those
different colors at funerals; everything is explained. Plus, she's
included authentic recipes for festivals and special foods that
are made for specific seasons through out the year.
I will be re-reading this book for my future
children so they will know the customs and remember that they
have a heritage that transcends time.
Review: Great wealth
of information
I am a Chinese American and have always wondered about why we
observed certain customs in my home.Lots of times when I asked
my parents why we did the things we did they just said it was
tradition. They did not go in to much detail as to the why. This
book provided a lot of the answers that I had, and now I can pass
them on to my children so now they can know why.Wonderful reference
book.
Review: Great book for Amer-Asian-Chinese!
For at least a decade I wished an author would document the curious
Chinese customs I have grown up with. Finally, one woman has made
the effort--Rosemary Gong--to capture the essence of Chinese traditions,
bringing them to life and rendering them more meaningful than
ever. These are teachings to pass on throughout the generations.
Thanks to Ms. Gong!
Chinese Dim Sum: A Pocket Guide (Paperback)
From Publishers Weekly
Dim sum is one of the great pleasures of Chinese cuisine, but
it can be bewildering for Westerners unfamiliar with Chinese cooking.
This little red book, which would easily fit in a back pocket
or purse, serves as an illustrated explanation of the items one
can expect to find at a dim sum restaurant—with it, one can figure
out what’s inside that steamed dumpling, what that tiny dish of
meat is and how to tell the difference between a White Turnip
Cake and a Taro Cake. For each of the 48 dishes included here,
the author provides a color photo and gives a description in English,
along with a phonetic pronunciation of the dish’s Cantonese name.
Introductory paragraphs give useful tips, such as how to tell
the host or hostess the number in your party in Chinese, how to
indicate to the waiter or waitress that you’re ready for a refill
of your teapot and how to use chopsticks. Cute, clever and handy,
this book makes a great gift item for foodies.

Book Description
With its small plates and endless assortment of dishes, dim sum
is an increasingly popular way to do brunch. For those new to
this fun feast, or regulars looking to try a different dish, Dim
Sum is the ultimate guidebook to this traditional Chinese meal.
Perfect for popping into a purse or pocket, this handy guide identifies
the 50 most popular dim sum dishes with full-color photographs,
short descriptions of the ingredients, the names of the dishes
in English and Cantonese, and how to pronounce them. As the carts
roll by, a quick glance at the book will tell a jean gow choy
bang (chive dumpling) from mong gwor bo deen (mango pudding),
and demystify the contents of that bamboo steamer. With tips on
restaurant etiquette and how-tos for everything from refilling
the teapot to handling chopsticks, Dim Sum is yum yum for everyone.
Moonbeams, Dumplings & Dragon Boats: A Treasury of
Chinese Holiday Tales, Activities & Recipes (Hardcover)
From Publishers Weekly
In Moonbeams, Dumplings & Dragon Boats: A Treasury of Chinese
Holiday Tales, Activities & Recipes by Nina Simonds, Leslie
Swartz and the Children's Museum, Boston, illus. by Meilo So,
each of a quartet of holidays includes a brief background and
introduces a bevy of crafts, recipes and legends. "The Story
of the Kitchen God" kicks off the section on the Chinese
New Year (and the reason behind serving the traditional tanggua,
or candied melons); a recipe for Five-Treasure Moon Cakes stuffed
with apricot preserves, pitted dates, sweet coconut and raisins
helps youngsters celebrate the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival. Step-by-step
illustrations aid in food preparation or crafts such as New Year
Prints or Good Luck Characters in this elegantly designed volume.

From School Library Journal
Grade 4-7-This book features five holidays: Chinese New Year and
the Lantern Festival, Qing Ming, the Dragon Boat Festival, and
the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival. Each section begins with a one-page
description of the history and customs of the festival and is
followed by a four- to six-page story, from one to three recipes,
and two or three crafts or games. The headings on each page appear
in both English typeface and Chinese calligraphy; a guide to Chinese
pronunciation is included. The ample white space surrounding the
text is filled with small, whimsical watercolor illustrations.
Each of the four sections is introduced by a dynamic, detailed
watercolor painting on a double-page spread. They include a dragon
parade complete with fireworks, kites flying above a family honoring
ancestors at a grave, a dragon boat race, and preparations for
a moon ceremony. A two-page resource section is divided into three
parts: of interest to adults, of interest to young readers, and
Internet sources. Most books for young readers about Chinese holidays
stress Chinese New Year; only two others feature the full range
of annual festivals. Carol Stepanchuk's Red Eggs & Dragon
Boats (Pacific View, 1994) is a shorter book with a similar scope,
but fewer recipes and crafts/activities. Judith Karen Gee's A
Book of Chinese Festivals (Steam RR, 1989; o.p.) offers a brief
description of each holiday but no recipes or other activities.
Moonbeams is a useful, visually appealing addition to any holiday
collection.

Review: beautiful, delightful book, November 19, 2003
... I was looking for Chinese folk tales. What a great surprise!
I am totally envious of kids today who get books like these --
how I wish they had something like this when I was little so that
I would have been more familiar with my own cultural background.
The book is organized by following the Chinese traditions/festivals/holidays
through the course of a year. Stories, recipes, activities are
paired with each holiday to give you a full sense of what happens
on each one of these special occasions. I recognized bits and
pieces of the folklore from the stories that my mom and grandparents
told me when I was growing up...so it really feels authentic (not
watered down) yet still accessible. The watercolors/illustrations
are beautiful to look at too. Highly recommended.
Review: delicious!
a winner!
what a delight for children and their parents and teachers!! in
a world consumed by suspicion and fear of "the other"
here is a wonderful and friendly guide to a culture teeming with
fabulous cuisine and colorful celebrations. this is indeed one
world, and introducing young children to each other in this gentle
journey through kitchen and holidays has to point to a better
world for all children. beautiful, colorful, easy to follow recipes,
and wonderfully interesting, this book is a winner! enthusiastically
recommended! norman d. levine, md
Review: A delightful
book well illustrated
Reviewer: Liow Kah Joon "Author of A Musical Journey: From
the Great Wall of China to the Water Towns of Jiangnan" (Shanghai,
China)
I found this book on Amazon while writing my children's book.
"Moonbeams" is a delightful children's book. Combining
the legends, activities and recipes for each Chinese festival
is a clever and useful idea that is carried out very well in this
book.
A friend borrowed my copy a few months ago and
it looks like the book's not coming back!
Review: Beautiful!
This book is filled with inspirational stories, fantastic recipies,
and nifty craft ideas - perfect for celbrating all chinese holidays
- great to share with your child
Review: Superbly
illustrated children's book on Chinese Holidays
This book is absolutely fantastic in it's overall illustrative,
watercolor depictions of bringing about the folktales and legends
to life that have influenced the Chinese holidays I have come
to know and celebrate. There are great craft activities on making
dragon boats for the Dragon boat festival, fabulous recipes you
can make to enjoy authentic Chinese cuisine, as well reading entertaining
stories from which these legends originated from. I have bought
this book mainly to gain some insight into the story behind the
Spring Festival of the Kitchen God for my Oral Communications
Speech, and it's provided me with a recipe along with illustrations
which my friend has used for our Power Point presentation. I would
recammend this book to anyone looking to explore the history of
Chinese culture and cuisine because it has been valuable to me.
Review: Chinese
Customs and Traditions Package in Delight
From Nina Simonds, comes an entertaining activity book that combines
the enchantment of ancient Chinese tales with lessons of tradition
and history. A blending of delightful storytelling and colorful
illustration makes this a cultural delight.
The Perfect Wedding Reception :
Stylish Ideas For Every Season (Hardcover)
Book Description
Once couples decide to say "I do"
there are dozens and dozens of decisions to be made. It's hard
to know where to begin and even more difficult to fit all the
dozens of details together into one wonderful event. Thankfully
Maria McBride-Mellinger, author of acclaimed bridal books, stylishly
illustrates just how to create a dreamy reception that will be
forever memorable.
The Perfect Wedding Reception features exquisite
wedding celebrations designed by Maria McBride-Mellinger that
capture the magic of each season in refreshing, contemporary style.
The nuptial adventure begins in a formal spring garden but soon
its off to a beach front for a fanciful summer wedding, to a revolutionary
era stone barn for a rustic fall wedding and finally to a gracious
country home for a candle lit winter wedding feast.
Glorious photos of each location, flowers, menu
selections, table details, centerpieces, bouquets, invitations,
wedding cakes and favors tell the story of each wedding with helpful
tips and most importantly McBride-Mellinger's favorite resources
from around the country that will actually help bring your wedding
reception to life.
Whatever season you choose to marry Maria McBride-Mellinger
offers delightful flourishes to tempt every couple as they plan
the party of their lives and create memories meant to last a lifetime.
Review: Perfection!
As a second-time bride, this was the book that "did it"
for me. My October wedding reception, while not the exact replica
of Ms. McBride-Mellinger's, incorporated as many of her ideas
as I could. This is an absolutely beautiful book which will be
an inspiration to any bride to be that wants a classy, memorable
wedding befitting her chosen season. The settings, invitations,
floral designs, cakes, and small touches are unique and certainly
can be "scaled down" for those on a smaller budget.
Not the end-all, be-all catalogue of a bridal book...but a digestable
and exquisite source of inspiration.
Review: Beautiful
pictures, but not enough different weddings
This book has wonderful pictures of four weddings, one in each
season.
The pictures are truly extraordinary, but they are almost exclusively
of these four weddings, so there aren't tons of different ideas
for each season, rather one "theme" idea for each season.
One thing that disappointed me was that her summer wedding was
a casual one on the beach, so if you want more formal ideas for
a summer wedding you are out of luck. Like other reviewers have
said, most of these perfect presentations would be completely
out of a lot of people's price range, but you could definitely
pull a few ideas that you loved from her spreads and make it work
on a smaller budget. By and large this is a good supplementary
book on reception ideas, with tons of photos and some good "idea"
text (as opposed to "how-to" text.)
Review: OSTENTATIOUS
IDEAS FOR EVERY SEASON BUT NOT EVERY BRIDE
If Kennedy or Vanderbilt is your last name and I mean The Kennedys
and The Vanderbilts, if Bill Gates is your wedding sponser or
if you are a member of the Royal Family then this book is for
you. If you live in the real world you may not want to bother
reading a book that would embarrass even Martha Stewart. Even
if your wedding budget isn't that of a small nation you can uncover
some ideas to use on a realistic day of bliss. But I would leave
out the "Honeymoon bed out in the open" next to a swamp
unless you are marrying Jeff Corwin or the Crocodile Hunter. Look
at page 116 and see if you would like to spend your wedding night
there but McBride-Mellinger says "far from sight of the area's
inhabitants". It's also far from sight of a bathroom, room
service and Walgreen's to get some mosquito spray and close to
sight for anything with four or six legs or even eight hairy ones
that hopefully would be four groomsmen rather than a spider. As
in all the weddings in the book, the cakes are works of art, the
prettiest I've ever seen (pgs 106&107, 214&215 "a
masterpiece" and the chapter on Confections) and the flowers
are magnificent. If you read this book make sure to have a dictionary
for all the $2.00 words as it must have been written with a word
processor in one hand an a Thesaurus in the other. Also, a really
good cook book will come in handy to try and figure out what everyone
was eating. McBride-Mellinger is even so helpful as to tell you
how to dress the "help" as if in this day and time the
guests even know what to wear, where the "help" should
go to the bathroom, and to prepare food incase they work more
then four hours. But do show respect because Maria McBride-Mellinger
has a very high opinion of herself and a much over inflated ego.
"The Perfect Wedding Reception" is that: perfectly ostentatious, pretentious, over
the top and prefectly not for middle class America. The book is
a "perfect" waste of a good tree. For over 30 years
I have been a floral artist and wedding planner with the experience
of over 500 weddings in all parts of the US and Europe.
Review: creative
suggestions
This book suggests many creative ways to make your wedding reception
fun and unique. The author describes 4 weddings (one for each
season) thoroughly and with an artist's eye for detail and color.
She also provides an extensive index for all aspects of reception
preparation and planning. The pictures vividly display the character
of each wedding, bringing them to life. I would have prefered
some extra examples with illustrations of decorationg ideas for
each season that were not part of the featured wedding. It would
have been nice to have some more practical examples of possibilities.
The featured weddings are gorgeous but, for people like myself,
a bit out of reach financially. Surely, one can put a creative,
unique twist on some less eccentric styles to make them equally
as special, beautiful and perfect for any wedding.
Review: Very helpful
There are some wonderful suggestions here to make your day special.
You will read this and remember the little things to do. One recommendation
would be to direct readers to Katherine's Song, the wedding song
in Defenders of the Holy Grail (Ken Agori)...this is THE song
for this millenium. Of course, this may belong more at the service,
but at the reception for the first dance, WOW!! THis book is worth
the money...
Review: One of the
Best
In preparation for our wedding, I ordered just about every book
that I thought looked appealing and got great reviews, literally
HUNDREDS of dollars' worth of books! This and its companion, The
Perfect Wedding, stood out among the rest.
I liked it for the following reasons:
1. Beautiful pictures of original ideas. There were lots of pictures
and lots of ideas. Obviously you aren't going to find a book that
has absolutely every idea for flowers or cakes (it would be HUGE!),
but the ones that this book included were very nice.
2. Good mix of pictures and text. About 3/5 of the book was pictures
and ideas. It was divided up into 4 sections representing the
4 seasons, so you could get ideas for your specific season (getting
inspiration from the best of your season is a great idea!). The
other 2/5 of the book was resources with phone number, addresses,
websites, etc., so you could actually get ahold of the people
who put together the beautiful things in this book or go to the
places that would give you more of a similar idea.
3. Not just for the wealthy. Granted that I personally am not
too concerned with books geared for my budget, this book gave
ideas for all ranges of budgets. Of course, some of the cakes,
flowers, etc., must have been expensive, but she also gives ideas
that are more budget-conscious.
I would recommend this book, no question. It's
better than Colin Cowie's, on par with Martha's, and definitely
much better than Vera Wang's.
