Amazon.com essential video
Not an ideal choice for younger kids, this hip and violent animated feature from Disney was nevertheless a huge smash in theaters and on video, and it continues to enjoy life in an acclaimed Broadway production. The story finds a lion cub, son of a king, sent into exile after his father is sabotaged by a rivalrous uncle. The little hero finds his way into the "circle of life" with some new friends and eventually comes back to reclaim his proper place. Characters are very strong, vocal performances by the likes of Jeremy Irons, Nathan Lane, and Whoopi Goldberg are terrific, the jokes are aimed as much (if not more) at adults than kids, the animation is sometimes breathtaking, and the music is more palatable than in many Disney features. But be cautious: this is too intense for the Rugrat crowd. --Tom Keogh

Family Fun, Michael Trotman
"A Must-Buy for your family DVD collection." --This text refers to the DVD edition.

Sure, the king of beasts knows every inch of the Serengeti, but let's see that sucker try to navigate this DVD. For the long-awaited DVD debut of "The Lion King," Disney has created one of the format's most byzantine navigation schemes to date. Seven-year-olds might sense some sort of internal logic here, but most parents will be stumped and peeved. Breathe, close your eyes and try very hard not to throw the remote control.

It doesn't help that the feature-film disc opens with eight "sneak previews" and a live-action commercial for Disney World. What should be an event experience is cheapened before it begins: "The Lion King" -- a crown jewel of modern Disney animation -- unspools like any straight-to-video kiddie show.

It's a shame, because otherwise, "The Lion King" gets the royal treatment. Restored and remastered, "The Lion King" looks and sounds spectacular. Colors can be wildly saturated without loss in definition -- as in baby Simba's Busby Berkeley-inspired "I Just Can't Wait to Be King" -- or subtle and true to life.

The audio defaults to the theatrical surround mix, but anyone with decent gear should switch immediately to the so-called Enhanced Home Theatre Mix (both are Dolby Digital 5.1). "It will test your home system set-up," vows the proud rerecording engineer Terry Porter, who gets to explain his work in an unusual but quite welcome DVD extra. (It's on disc 2; dig deep to find it).

Most viewers will first view the new version of the film, which has an added song, by Elton John and Tim Rice, that's explained in a making-of featurette. Rice describes the music-hall-like "Morning Report" as "a lot of bad animal puns." The song, sung by Zazu, runs less than 90 seconds and comes early in the film. It's fun, but you'll probably prefer the original pacing.

Viewers not interested in chasing around the DVD set to get the lowdown on the film -- there's a swarm of quick-cut Disney docus -- will do just fine with the commentary by producer Don Hahn and directors Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff. It's recycled from the laserdisc but not the least bit dated.

One of the best extras has old footage of Elton John at the piano, tentatively unveiling "The Circle of Life" for the Disney team. Must to avoid: An unfortunate music video has the current stars of the Disney Channel romping through "Circle of Life." --This text refers to the DVD edition

Disney's The Lion King is finally available on DVD. Considered the cream of the crop of all the Disney animated features by many, it is definitely worth owning. I don't think I'll go into the story, which I'm sure most of you know. Chances are you've already seen the movie and are just waiting to own it on a piece of media that won't rot like your VHS tape that probably fell apart by now. Even if Disney released a sub par release of this movie, you'd buy it.
Luckily, this is one of the best releases ever.

Video and Audio is supreme in this release. Especially vibrant is the 5.1 sound. Of all the older Disney releases, this one benefits the most I think, with the powerful music and sound effects present in this release. Hearing James Earl Jones as Mufasa blaring in thunderous 5.1 sound is quite amazing. Likewise the excellent music, such as the opening Circle of Life. Present in this release is the original theatrical version as well as a version with new music/song. I actually didn't care for the new song, but some may. The extras are quite numerous, contained on a second DVD and are mentioned in Amazon's product details...I haven't had the time to go through them yet, so I cannot comment on the extras. I just watched the movie again. To be honest, the movie would be worth it as a single disc release so I'm happy as it is.

Some interesting trivia for some of the people who are not aware of it is that The Lion King seemed to be heavily "influenced" by an old Japanese anime, Kimba The White Lion. Those wishing to see the "similarities" would do well to check out that series as it has also been released on DVD. Carbon copying aside, I do love the Lion King. It still manages to grab you whether you are 4 years old or 40. Two thumbs up!! --This text refers to the DVD edition

The Lion King was great in '94 but when you add the new Morning Report song and games on this DVD, it is just the best! One of my favorite Disney movies, and I've seen almost all of them! A must have for every DVD collection. --This text refers to the DVD edition

This was back when America did cartoon movie's that had great animation with out that 3D stuff. The Lion King is what started it all with great animation people were blown away. Simba is a Lion cube who can't wait to be king of the Pride Land in Africa. Until his evil uncle Scar had the Hyenas chase a heard of wilderbeast down a hill wear Simba was thats when he was running then Scar when to his brother Mufasa that his son Simba is wear the heard is once Mufasa got Simba out of trouble Mufasa was climbing up a clift asking for Scar's help thats when he pushed him off the clift and fell on his back side then he died. Then the Hyenas wear tring to kill Simba but he ran far away. --This text refers to the DVD edition

You know what you are buying when you buy a Disney product. There is no question that you get a top quality cartoon...but the rest is just rude.

Lion King is to my opinion the best Disney cartoon there has been made. The plot, the characters and just everything about the cartoon is fascanating. Five stars fort the actual cartoon.

How ever, you get an insight in what kind of a "dinosaur" Disney has become when you try to play the DVD.

First of all; you are forced to watch all the other disney commercials -1star.

If you wish to watch it on PC, you are forced to install a special program from Disney -2stars. Just not necessary since the VLC player can play the cartoon perfectly and is not as boring as this Disney player.

To summerize; you pay for a top product and get commercials and boring program. Sorry Disney - but I just cannot accept that and give a good review.

More artists and less laywers, that is my advice. --This text refers to the DVD edition

There is no denying that money can buy craftsmanship. The Lion King contains some of the most beautiful animation ever seen on the big screen. From the single aspect of making animated drawings, there are some lovely things to watch in this film. Until you get to the lions' faces. Most recent Disney films are done in the style of past Disney films, as if the corporation decided to hedge their bets--'we'll do it like we did it back then, because we know it worked'. The Lion King's character designs are based on Disney's Jungle Book, which had some of the most un-cat-like cat faces ever drawn. So, after all the talk about realism in the making of this movie, I just cannot get into the way the characters look. There seems to be a touch of "Cabaret"-style makeup on their faces, and I have avoided seeing "Cabaret" because the makeup style creeps me out.

So, is there a good story to save this film? Ummmm.... no. Oh, I know things happen, but why do they happen? How does Simba manage the turnaround that allows him to save the day? There is no character development for the main character of this movie!

In typical Disney fashion, we get more insight into the villain's character. The villain also gets plenty of juicy screen time, and gets the most intense images, both in his character design (greater contrast in the visual elements = greater impact) and in his environment and supporting characters. This movie is really about evil, and how powerful evil is. Simba's overthrow of the evil elements is confusing and inexplicable in the universe of this movie.

No wonder I hear so many reports of small children waking up screaming in the middle of the night after watching The Lion King.

I will always consider The Lion King as a must-to-avoid when it comes to picking a movie to show to children. For someone old enough to view it as an example of high craftsmanship in the physical art of animation, it is fine. As entertainment... no, there is no merit in the storytelling in this film.

As is all the rage of late, the movie on this DVD has been altered in several places from its original theatrical version. Why? Don't ask me. --This text refers to the DVD edition

The Lion King : Pride Rock On Broadway

Review:

The Lion King on broadway is by far the best most amazing show ever created. Whats so amazing is that the book is as good as the musical. Without Julie Taymor the lion king would not be such a huge success as it is and you find all about this in the book. Some of the pictures of the show itself and the costumes are just wonderful which makes the presentation of the book even more wonderful. I dont even read books but am findin it very hard to put this down and read it over and over again.

"How could the book be better than the show?!" You may ask yourself. Well, although this is a phenomenal show, the book is not simply a collection of pictures for the show but a totally round experience throwing light on every angle possible of the creation of the show, *aside* from displaying pictures from every scene in the show.
For theater people, this book is completely engrossing. If you are a set designer, you can see how the set developed through the original ideas years before production to the final set onstage, with concpet drawings, explanations, models and of course final production photographs. If you are a lighting designer you can find explanations about the lighting, and a partial technical diagram of the lights above the stage that only a lighting designer would understand (it is partial because the full diagram is so extensive that it could never fit onto a page in the book. I preffered having a detailed partial diagram to pore over rather than a full one where you couldn't read anything.) If you are a director, you have pages upon pages of Julie Taymor expaining the source of her ideas, dilemas she had, disagreements she had with the producers and a great section about the tech rehearsals with a list of major problems the team encountered and their solutions (like "The actress palying Sarabi is scared of heights and she has to walk up Pride Rock at the beginning of the show. It is 20 feet high, it turns, rises from the stage and has no railing. Solution: she will get over it". Most problems required more creative solutions.)

If you are not a theater person, you will still appreciate this book simply for how beautiful it is. It is filled with endless amounts of pictures from the show and rehearsals, workshops and scene/costume/puppet shops.

So even though there is nothing that compares to seeing a really good show like this one, the book in this case offeres an amazing and interesting experience.

I absolutely LOVE The Lion King. I, unfortunately have not yet been able to see it yet, but I might this summer and I'm so excited! I am 14 years old and I have recognized, for a long time now, Julie Taymor's brilliance! She is a designing and directing genius! I bought her SUPREME book title Playing With Fire, which I strongly recommend you all to buy...
The music from TLK on Broadway is, in itself, a brilliant thing! And, once again, if you don't have the CD, go out and buy that too. This book is an awesome thing that tells the whole story of bringing life to the godlike stage production we know to be TLKoB. The book is split into three parts; conceptualization, development, and performance. Julie Taymor is awesome and I love her! I would just DIE if I could meet her!

Many people don't understand the concept of infinity; I can't explain it except that it "goes on forever;" which is the way I feel about this book, the music, and ultimately, the musical. I'd give this book infinite stars! Enjoy!

"The Lion King : Pride Rock on Broadway" was really fun looking at.It had wonderful photos from the show and told how the show came together from conception to production design. It showed you costume designs, the actors in full costume, the sets, how they did the phenominal special effects, and much more! It's cool, and one of my favorite theater books!

I've ordered a total of 6 things from amazon.com and I have to say that this is the best of them all. It offers culture, education, freedom, fun, memorabilia and best of all the chance to see the Best Walt Disney Film Ever Made shown in behind the scenes action as it turns into a Broadway Production. My friend introduced me to it, and he will also be auditioning for a part in the London production coming soon he is very talented and this book is made up of the Best of the Best of the very very talented. Buy it I assure that it's a good buy. Em

Spectacular! Amazing!
I have seen The Lion King on Broadway three times at present, and I will honestly say that "The Lion King : Pride Rock on Broadway" by the incredable Julie Taymore showcases this wonderful play excellently.

Amazing images are throughout this excellent book, which certainly bring back a wealth of memories from New York. As well, behind the scenes information about the planning and construction of the play are great!

If you have not seen The Lion King on Broadway, do yourself a favor and go to the most amazing show this broadway veteran has ever seen. And, buy this book.

If you have seen The Lion King on Broadway, you need no excuse-- Buy this book. :)

I had just seen the Broadway play today and to book helped me follow how everything fell in place. It's a great book even for the kids to read.!!

"Pride Rock On Broadway" is a beautifully illustrated, written and deeply felt struggle to bring a major theatrical project to successful life.
The author takes the reader on a journey that the audience rarely get to see adding to our overall appreciation of the mega-hit stage show.
From initial concepts to finished production.
Her production team echoe these sentiments offering a fascinating trip into their world. The tears, the laughter, the joy, the frustrations its all here in words and pictures.
This is how books about musicals should be written.
It is exciting, stimulating, imaginative and a must have for all theatre fans.
Grand in design and grand in its writing this is a must have for anyone who loves and cares for the theatre.

Disney know how meets Broadway theatre and the results (apart from a smash hit musical) come to life in this book.
For those of us who do and for those of us who dream of putting on stage musicals you will find this insipiring journey enough to jump start you into motion.

Of all Disney's popular animated movies, "The Lion King" seemed the least likely candidate for a stage production. Yet from the moment the "The Lion King" opened on Broadway, it began to draw both audiences and praise.
The credit for the production's huge success belongs to Julie Taymor, the award-winning director and designer who turned the most popular Disney movie of all time into a powerful and mesmerizing piece of performance art. Ms. Taymor provides a glimpse into the process that brought Simba and company to life on stage in her book, "The Lion King: Pride Rock on Broadway."

This book shares many of the challenges faced by the author as she attempted to meet Michael Eisner's desire for a traditional Broadway musical. These challenges ranged from staging unstageable scenes from the movie such as the wildebeest stampede to inventing puppets that convey all of the emotions necessary from the famous characters.

It is the sketches and photographs of the puppets that comprise most of the book. The designs are fascinating and demonstrate the amazing creativity Taymor brought to her production. Some of the puppets are so beautiful that one questions whether they belong on stage or instead should be hanging on the walls of a gallery.

"The Lion King: Pride Rock on Broadway" will be enjoyed by anyone who loved Simba and his friends--both on the screen and on stage.

Disney's the Lion King

Review

As a published and award winning author, I take my hat off to this wonderful woman who has taken such a great film and adapted it so well for children.
However, there is a problem with this singular novelization.
Its short length does present a problem.
The Lion King is an epic film, and needs to be novelized in an epic novel, not some childrens storybook.
What I mean by novelized, is that the story is written down, expanded, and shown in the light that it was originally meant to be. A short childrens "novel" wont cut it unfortunately.

What needs to be done, is a full-length novel needs to be written, along the lines of say the length of Carrie or something of that nature. This would allow the author to expand the universe of the Lion King, explore subplots and motives, really flesh out the characters and have some fun with creating the history of some of our most cherished characters as well as new scenes, locales, and events, making it appeal not only to children, but to the adult and senior audiences as well.

Luckily, this is already in progress. I happen to be working on a manuscript for this novel, and it will be finished sometime in 2006-07. Hopefully, it will restore what the Lion King has lost ( or could not put into a childrens movie or book due to violence, and motivation) and reclaim this epic for a new literary age.

This book is great. When the Lion King came out, I loved it, so I got this book for Christmas. I had my mom read it over and over and when she couldn't, I'd read it myself! This is a terrific book so if you loved the movie, don't miss out on this beautiful adaptation.

Disney Presents the Lion King: With Photographs from the Broadway Musical, Winner of the 1998 Tony Award (Disneys) (Board book)

Review:

If you have a chance to see the musical of the Lion King... Run to see it! It is the most colorful and beautiful play! The costumes are spectaclar. But this play is not for young children 2 to 5 year olds, even those who love the movie. Wait until they are older to take them. In the meantime they can see a small slice of the play and feel like there where there with you! Again an awesome glimpse into the musical, and if you get the chance to see this play.. RUN TO IT!

Julie Taymor ha conseguido el mejor musical de la temporada gracias a su inagotable ingenio, creatividad y riqueza de técnicas teatrales. En The Lion King los espectadores entramos en un mundo de magia y color como nunca lo habíamos hecho.
