Look Out Ladybug (Follow the Trail Board Books) (Board book)

This sturdy board book filled with big, bright, full-page, full-color illustrations has tiny sunken tracks on every page. Each track is just the right size so that toddlers can run a finger across the picture, following the trail of a colorful ladybug. Some trails are straight, while others have curves or wiggles or corners—but each trail moves across a picture in exactly the way that the story's hero moves. Very young children will love these stories, as they trace a finger through a flower garden, or up a flight of stairs, or across the back of a big, furry dog.

Ladybug's Birthday (Sidebyside) (Paperback)

Amazon Reviews

Since I am an elementary school teacher, I always buy my nephew theme presents for his birthday. I happened upon this book while looking for an offbeat fiction book about ladybugs. It was surprisingly entertaining. The plot is very positive as ladybug's friends take turns solving problems they have caused by bringing additional guests to her birthday party. The text is kid-pleasing with lots of alliteration (family of flighty fireflies, sprinkling of spindly spiders, etc)and predictable language. The illustrations are simple, yet bright and eye-catching. It is part of a Scholastic series called "Side by Side, Books for collaborative reading". According to Scholastic, "the structure of the text encourages taking turns because it combines a read-aloud book with an emergent reader, which results in true collaborative reading". Although the emergent text has been highlighted, is much larger than the read-aloud text, and is isolated on the left hand page, I'm not sure how well this book would work as a true emergent text. The reading levels rise sharply after the very simple introductory pages. This is a small quibble as the language is engaging and predictable and young children love to chime in to "read" a book whether that involves true reading (decoding the words) or merely repeating memorized words. The book has 29 pages so would be most appropriate for children aged 4-6.

The Very Lazy Ladybug

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 1-The ladybug of the title is so lethargic that she doesn't even know how to fly. She decides to look for a new sleeping spot, and, since her mobility is restricted, she latches on to a number of passing animals. As she soon finds out, a kangaroo is too bouncy, a monkey's incessant swinging makes her dizzy, and a tiger's roaring makes it too noisy to sleep. Finally, she thinks she's found the perfect spot-on the trunk of an elephant. However, the elephant sneezes and the ladybug is launched into the air and has to fly at last. The illustrations are done in bold, eye-catching colors, and the animals are very simply drawn and easily recognizable. The variety in the type reflects the action and movement of the animals. Children will enjoy acting out the tale as the ladybug looks for a quiet place to sleep. A natural for storytime.

My 2 year old daughter loves this book. We have a lady bug handpuppet and I act out all of the ladybugs actions with the puppet as I read the book. My daughter's favorite part is when the elephant sneezes aaaaaachooo! It makes her laugh every time. Unfortunatly this part of the book is a fold out page and I try to avoid buying books with them if it all possible. Of course the page got ripped by an over entheusiastic toddler who just couldn't wait to get to her favorite part. I taped it back together and while it bothers me that it is ripped it does not faze her in the least. The story is delightful, the illustrations are sweet, and it makes my daughter laugh all of which makes this a winner.

I have been reading this to my daughter since she was 3 or 4 months old. She gets fussy if I try to read another book, but as soon as I start to read this one, she calms down and listens. I don't know if it is the story or the pictures. I am trying to find one that catches her attention as well as this one. Any ideas???

This book is of very excellent construction, is a very pleasing book to hold, should stand up to your kids' abuse and is an excellent addition to your collection. This book is like a giant board book. The book's dimensions are about 9"x11" so it's very significant which really helps bring the wonderful illustrations to life -- no squinting to see the pictures! Also, the pages are very thick -- like a board book -- except that the pages are several times bigger than a normal board book. The pages are also glossy and shiny so it's nice to hold and should also repel any liquids your kid spills on them. The illustrations are very cute and the colors are very vibrant, especially since the pages are so big.

The Very Lazy Ladybug wants to find a new place to do her favorite thing, sleep. Unfortunately, she's spent too much time sleeping, and not enough time learning how to fly. Follow her as she tries out various animal body parts in her quest for the perfect napping spot. Great for prediction activities, developing vocabulary and adjectives, felt board stories, movement,etc.... Colorful illustrations and repetition that children will love. A great addition to any home or classroom collection!

Are You A Ladybug? (Backyard Books)

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 2-Short sentences in large print are juxtaposed against colorful, close-up, watercolor-and-pencil illustrations. Each accessible book begins with its title question and tells readers how they would experience life as that creature, keeping the familiar form of address throughout, e.g., "If you are [a ladybug], your parents look like this, and they eat-." The books briefly describe their subjects' birth, growth and development, a few outstanding physical and behavioral characteristics, diet, habitat, and natural enemies. The narratives then segue into a reality check, stating, "However, if your parents look a little like this-You are-a human child." Each title ends with a list of miscellaneous facts about the invertebrate discussed. While the texts are simply and clearly written, there are a couple of minor flaws. Ladybug fails to define the word aphid, although the soft-bodied insect is referred to several times, and Snail defines poison as "poisonous." Joanne Ryder's beautifully illustrated, lyrical The Snail's Spell (Puffin, 1988) serves as an excellent introduction for preschoolers, but Allen's titles will attract young nature lovers.

From Kirkus Reviews
“Are you a ladybug? If you are, your parents look like this, and they eat aphids.” So begins a charming little book from the Backyard Books series (Are You a Snail?, not reviewed) that documents the amazing life cycle of the common ladybug. Throughout, Humphries engages the viewer's imagination with clear, close-up illustrations, done in soft watercolors, of beetles from egg to adult. The text invites the listener to be part of the story, growing inside an egg, hatching as a strange larva, resting in the hard, shell-like pupa, and finally emerging complete with wings, spots, and a bright red coat. “Congratulations, you're a ladybug.” With tongue in cheek, the author explains that if your parents look like humans, you are not a ladybug, “You are a human child.” And advises, “Your skin will not split as you grow. You can't fly. It is very unlikely that you are red with black dots.” The author concludes with facts about ladybugs; for example, “a ladybug can eat about 70 aphids a day.” The titles in this series have shiny board covers, glossy paper, a modest price, small size and a great deal of appeal. For reading aloud or reading alone, preschool and early childhood children will find these young information books delightful. (Nonfiction. 4-8) --

I was thrilled when I found this book! It is so difficult to teach children that metamorphosis doesn't just mean when a caterpillar becomes a butterfly - that it happens to all insects. Observing the metamorphosis of more than one animal is the key. This book is simply splendid alongside the Ladybug Land product from Highlights.com where you purchase a ladybug habitat and larvae and observe the process for yourself. I agree with all the enthusiastic reviews below and rate this book * highly recommended * in terms of accessible fun reading & valuable scientific content.

This book has it all--engaging, not too complicated text, GREAT illustrations and a lots of good science content. I have a huge collection of pre-school, early elem. books on insects, but none of them cover the type of metamorphosis that the lady beetle goes through, with the larvae looking totally different than the adult, and the pupae looking . . . well not like a butterfly cocoon, that's for sure, just a spotted lump! I was conducting a class for middle school teachers and we found a lady beetle pupa on a leaf and I thought in might be a gall. Luckily my book order for the early elementary class came in and I noticed the picture in the "Are You a Ladybug" book that explained what we had found. That's a pretty good endorsement for a pre-school book, that it can teach a middle school science class new information! Also, this book is very usefull to teach about how insect predators help control pest populations, since the beetles in the book eat aphids and more aphids. Again, this type of information is not often found in pre-school level books. I bought the grasshopper book too, and I like these books so much I am ordering the whole series!

This book disguises the science, not sugar-coating it, but presenting it in plain kid-speak, inviting them to enter the world of the ladybug in a humourous and engaging way.
Amazon seems to have rated this book at preschool level, but for its hard-core insect trivia, I'd recommend it for any bug-lovers five and up, and their parents who LOVE finding read-aloud books that the whole family can laugh and learn from.

An excellent book that introduces children to the idea of metamorphosis while keeping their attention. Many people do not recognize the immature stage of the ladybug but this book treats it with humor -- when the eggs hatch, "you might think you have all made a big mistake" because of course immatures look nothing like adult ladybird beetles.

If so, maybe you are a ladybug. The authors trace a ladybug's life from egg to maturity. Good information for primary grade insect reports. Large print and illustrations on lots of white space. The illustrator does much better with the ladybugs than the big-mouthed people featured at the end.
