Suggested Haunted Houses:

Busch Garden Howl-O-Scream

Are you in the mood to be totally creeped out this year? Try Tampa Bay's Busch Garden attraction Howl-O-Scream. Howl-O-Scream is Busch Garden's terrifying Halloween evening event which takes place throughout October. It happens for 17 nights. Remember though Howl-O-Scream is definitely too intense for young children.

It is super creepy and truly rises above the rest. It is an original through and through. The park totally transforms itself into a horror filled nightmare. True Halloween connoisseurs will be delighted with it's haunted pleasures. There are 6 haunted houses at Howl-O-Scream! The costumes, and scenery are ingenius and are guaranteed to thrill you to the bone. If you don't want to be scared out of your mind all the time, there are halloween musical attractions like Monster Mash to regain your sanity.

Universal Studio Halloween Horror Nights

Another great professional choice for Halloween haunted house fun is Universal Studios in Orlando.

They say if you prefer smaller lines and less waiting to get into the attractions go early in the month. Universal studios is very good at constructing extremely complex haunted houses that are filled with gore and weird smells. However remember that Universal is famous for long long wait times. Be sure to remember this and try to go before peak times!!!

The Myrtles Plantation : The True Story of America's Most Haunted House

Being just a little skeptical of The Myrtles I mainly picked up this book because I very much enjoyed this author's previous book filled with ghost accounts from across the country. Now that I have read this book which is written with such sincere conviction and forthright honesty I am convinced that The Myrtles is indeed a very haunted place.

Frances Kermeen and her husband Jim bought The Myrtles in 1980 with the intent of being innkeepers and they appear to have been very successful in that enterprise. So successful in fact that they had several guests that just wouldn't leave. As she relates the story of her often frightening experiences at The Myrtles Ms. Kermeen come across as one of the most sincere authors that I have come across when reading this type of book. She holds nothing back and gives the reader the whole story no matter how hard it must have been for her to write about. Interestingly it is this author who finds out that some of the legends surrounding the plantation are incorrect and through much hard work she pieces together what really happened which actually may have pacified some of the spirits.

What happened to the author and her family and friends at The Myrtles is so fascinating that I basically read this book in one sitting. Just like a great novelist, Ms. Kermeen manages to make the reader really begin to care about the people in the story and one begins to worry about what may happen to them next and it becomes very hard to put this book down. The only negative to be found in this book is the author's sometimes-condescending attitude toward Southern traditions regarding marriage and manners. That type of attitude is why we Southerners are so leery of people who move in from other parts of the country but this small foible takes very little away from the book as a whole. This author's first book was quite good but I have never seen any author's writing skill improve so much between first and second books. I am sure that the personal feeling that she poured into this book will make it a classic for years to come.

If you wonder what it is like to live with ghosts or if you just like a good ghost story then this is a book you will definitely want to read. The story of The Myrtles will make you laugh, cry and duck your head under the bed covers. I hope that Ms. Kermeen will continue her research into the supernatural and will give us many, many more books like this one. This is very close to being the perfect ghost story book.

Don't read this in bed, alone, at night. If even half of the sightings are true I want to book a flight to Louisiana NOW. I have seen many stories on TV about the ghosts at this plantation. The book just added the icing to the cake of shivers. It is worth the read - and seems worth the price of the trip. Keep this one on your table for rainy nights and candles.

Review:
This is a chilling and very personal account. Why would Ms. Kermeen subject herself to a decade of fear? She suspects a voodoo curse acquired in Haiti and a susceptibility to the paranormal pulled her in. This book has lots of supernatural phenomena and commentary on the Myrtles renovation. The writing vacillates between compelling and amateurish. Such phrases as 'my heart gushed', 'I ached for his touch', etc. will elicit a chuckle. Frequent rants on past racism in St. Francisville, true or not, are distracting in a book about ghosts. So are comments like 'Jim and I were living together, not married. It's common in California... but this was the Deep South, the Bible Belt and they had other ideas...' We get the message: Liberal California Good! Deep South Bad! Ironically, after dissing Southern racists the author writes the following on page 196: '...I had to find a (tour) replacement for the ghost in the green turban...I grabbed my friend and made him up in drag to resemble the Aunt Jemima-looking ghost.' Why not say queen-sized ghost, or large lady ghost, or healthy looking ghost? Quite a few pages are devoted to Lillie Mae's childhood as a share cropper, white problems with the black prom, the Ku Klux Klan, and other disdainful "Southern" episodes. She even finds a subtle way to slam grits! Scenes involving her friend Hamp are laughable and corny: 'I wanted to be with Hamp...I would imagine the white light and try to go to it, hoping I, too, could die.' No wonder hubby Jim hit the sauce - the author often seems infatuated with Hamp. There's also a major discrepancy with Hamp's age - b1967 - d1980/81? A good editor would earn his keep here. But the imperfections and unpolished presentation actually work to this book's advantage. Even with its flaws I found myself flipping quickly thru the pages looking for the next scare or inadvertent witticism. Hollywood should come calling - this would make a great flick, say along the lines of Beetlejuice.

Review:

I picked up this book looking for a first person account of an actual haunting experience. I got what I was looking for! Frances relates a great story that is her true account owning and living at The Myrtles. Its a quick read - sucks you in and you can't put it down.

Review:
If you or anyone you know is currently looking for a book to scare the living crap out of you then YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK.

When I was looking for a book in the metaphysical section of borders I had one thing in mind "find the scariest looking novel you can find." I found this book in the top 10 most read section of the metaphysical section, so I thought I should try reading it for myself.

After reading this book in just 2 days (I couldn't put it down) I can safely say that this is the most frightening book I have ever read. Like I said if you are tired of the same medicore horror novel that stares back waiting for you to buy it just so you can waste your time reading it, then you definatly need to read this book. I assure you, you will not be dissapointed.

The Do It Yourself Haunted House Guide

Amazon Reviews

This is an EXCELLENT book for those who wish to run a small public haunted house. The planning guides and preparation run-throughs are excellent. My only problem with this book is that the sample room designs are rather trite and not very well done. None of them are good "walk-through" scares, and almost all of them require a guide of some kind. I will use this book when it comes to preparing for the Haunt, but I won't be using any of this material inside of it.

If you want a how-to haunted house book, this is the one! it covers everything that you could ever want to know about putting on a haunted house!!

Easy-to-make haunted house

Amazon Review

This book is great for intermediate grade kids. I used it last year with my then five-year-old girl and I had to help her a lot. However the results were highky appreciated by all of her Halloween party guests. They played with it so much that we had to throw it away! I think I'll buy a new one next year.
