Goblins! (Hardcover)
From Publishers Weekly
The conceit of renowned fantasy illustrator Froud’s latest book (after
The Runes of Elfland; Lady Cottington’s Faerie Album; Faeries; etc.) is
a clever one. The title page announces that, after working on the text
and illustrations, Froud and his colleague Berk disappeared, leaving behind
the dangerous fruits of their research into the goblin world. In a letter
marked with suspicious red scribbles, they beg the publisher not to print
their work, but the publisher decides to go ahead and release the book
"as is"—which means that Froud’s drawings and Berk’s notes appear
mussed up by dirty goblin fingerprints and scrawled with indignant goblin
commentary. For example, next to Froud’s drawing of a very grubby goblin
named the Royal Lady Empyreuma Frouzy, the authors’ goblin informer writes:
"nonsense this is sardine sallie she olde girrlfriend." The
whole book is pretty delightful, even for—or perhaps especially for—those
who couldn’t stand Froud’s pretty, ethereal faeries.

Book Description
Anyone who brings home this book will be in big trouble. Renowned artist
Brian Froud and scholar Ari Berk have conducted a thorough investigation
into the goblin realm. (For the uninformed, goblins, a subspecies of
faery, are those maleficent creatures that cause all manner of havoc
in the human realm.) The fruit of their labor, however, turned out to
be a rotten apple: the book is infected with goblins.
Now, thanks largely to Froud and Berk's continuing carelessness,
the noxious, viscid, and largely nonsensical volume has been unleashed
on an unsuspecting public. Among its pages are reproductions of the
ancient, odoriferous Codex Goblinensis; a glossary of common goblins
and their markings; and a gazetteer of goblin photographs taken with
the arcane Goblin Camera. Those fearing an infestation can refer to
the section detailing how to determine if you've "got goblins"
and, if so, what you can do about it. (There is nothing you can do about
it.)
Combining the folkloric approach of Faeries with the utter
wackiness of Lady Cottington, this is the team's most visually rich
and outrageous opus yet.
About the Author
Brian Froud is an award-winning illustrator, author, and faery authority.
His books include the international best-sellers Faeries, Lady Cottington's
Pressed Fairy Book, Lady Cottington's Fairy Album, and The Faeries'
Oracle. He also served as the conceptual designer on Jim Henson's films
The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth. Froud lives in Devon, England. Ari Berk
is a folklorist, poet, and scholar of literature, ethnography, iconography,
and comparative myth. He is also the author of popular titles for children,
as well as The Runes of Elfland with Brian Froud. Berk is associate
professor of English at Central Michigan University.
Review of "The Sticky Sandwich"
Purchased and read at great personal peril, I am glad that I took the
risk to obtain this book as it is the ultimate weapon against anxiety,
stress, and general bad moods caused by life in urban America. One need
only pick up "Goblins!" and open it to any page to be granted
a glimpse into the special world of these creatures, thanks to the brave
efforts of Fraud-face and Berk-head, I mean Brian Froud and Dr. Ari
Berk. This deliciously irreverent book is a must-have for anyone who
has ever read a fairy tale, watched a scary movie, had the water gone
cold during the shower, lost a sock and found a wire hanger, swallowed
sour milk by mistake... in short, lived through the normal trials of
daily life.
The book is chock-full of details about goblins -- not
just biographies of the devious creatures -- but a deeper look at their
culture (holidays, games, personal relationships, guilds and social
structure); in short, the collaborators have done their homework and
shine forth as the leading ethnographers of the faerie world. Along
with "The Runes of Elfland," these two books are an exquisite
fusion of Froud's deeply evocative art and Berk's incredibly clever
and literate prose.
Review: Cheese! Cheese in the deeps! They are
coming!
With a scientific rigour that is second to none and only matched in
enthusiasm, perhaps, by the Muppet Labs, Ari Berk and Brian Froud set
out to unearth the truth about the goblins (err, Goblins!) that infest
our refrigerators, our pets, the spaces between our sofa cushions and
in fact, our very lives. Yes, it's a lofty undertaking but who better
than Professor Berk (latest in a distinguished if somewhat squelchy
line of curators of the Lady Cottington archives) and the artistically
forceful if not yet forcibly restrained Froud to narrate and illustrate
the effort. They may not be Holmes and Watson, but they're a lot funnier.
Among the contents so minutely examined are the goblin's
holiday Almanack; a field guide to goblin types, with portraits and
principal characteristics; and vast amounts of ill-assorted notes about
goblins at play and, uh, play. There are also a few astonishing photographs
(realized in the end by the long-suffering Mme. Froud) presented with
date, time, and cheese conditions; a partial transcription of the ancient
and largely apocryphal Codex Goblinensis; and the pearl beyond price:
how to know if you have goblins (you do).
If you're looking for the delicate mysteries of "The
Runes of Elfland", you're on the wrong page. If you're looking
for fun and more surprises than you expect to find even in a completely
mad, outrageously well-illustrated and delightfully written large-format
volume, you're totally in the right place. Oh, and don't mind the cover.
It's a little sticky. Some of the pages are upside down, and goblin
graffiti is everywhere. But that's all right. As soon as you're willing
to leave the house in their care, it will get worse. But at least you'll
know why!
Review: Kind of funny
The art in this book is truly great - true froud goodnes. The comic
turn the bok tries to take is amusing, but bungling through some truly
annoying long drawn out stories makes them far too dry and english for
my tastes.
Review: Cute, but not "Faeries."
This book, while it has its enchanting moments, is not nearly as "inspired"
and as grand as Froud's "Faries" or Poortvliet's "Gnomes."
For the Froud collector only.
Review: Good gift for a kid
My daughter loves this book. She giggles at the descriptions and spends
lots of time staring at the illustrations. Her favorite is a goblin
named Follimal, the Grim Crimper, who "[p]rides herself in the
ability to make any mortal's hair look absolutely ridiculous by morning."
My daughter likes sharing books with friends, hoping that they will
laugh at all the places she does, and Goblins is the perfect book for
her - plenty to share and plenty to laugh at, whether you are 10 or
45. I like to give books as birthday gifts and this one is going to
the top of my list for nieces, nephews, and the children of all of my
friends. This book is funny and friendly (with just a dash of mischief
and a fart joke or two), and I recommend it highly.
Review: Most Beautiful Pop-up book I've ever seen
I found this book at a thrift store and just had to buy it! The Illustrations
are great, typical of Brian Froud of course, and the pop-ups are fun.
There are few words, as it is written for young children, but the story
is told more with the pictures anyway. If you can find this book in
good shape, with all the pop-ups intact, snatch it up!

The Goblin Wood (Paperback)
Reviews
From School Library Journal
Grade 5-8-Fantasy and intrigue blend in a mythical medieval land where
good and evil are not always clearly distinguishable. When the story
opens, 12-year-old Makenna has just witnessed the murder of her mother,
the local hedgewitch, by decree of a priest of the Hierarch, aided by
the villagers whom Makenna's mother had always helped. Angry and bitter,
the grieving girl seeks revenge on the village and runs away into the
woods, where she encounters and befriends the goblins-a small, magical
race of people who are being systematically exterminated by the Hierarch.
Advance five years to another part of the Hierarch's territory and meet
Tobin, a knight who takes the blame for his younger brother's role in
an attempted coup. Tobin will be allowed to redeem himself by capturing
the sorceress who has aligned herself with the goblins. This, of course,
is Makenna. When the two young people meet, they discover that the world
around them cannot be viewed as all good or all bad and together they
attempt to provide a safe haven for both humans and goblins. Fantasy
novels for young people do not often explore the gray areas, which makes
for some interesting and thought-provoking reading here. However, Bell
provides few transitions between times and places, making it difficult
to discern what has happened and where readers are in this mythical
world. This lack of transition detracts from an otherwise promising
political fantasy.

Gr. 6-10. After her mother is drowned as a sorceress, young hedgewitch
Makenna flees into the woodlands. While there, she accidentally antagonizes
some goblins, who plague her until she captures one, Cogswhallop, and
inadvertently puts him in her debt. As she travels with Cogswhallop,
she learns goblin rules about repaying a favor, and she soon finds herself
united with goblins in a battle against the ruling Hierarchy, bent on
eradicating all magical creatures. Five years later, a young knight
comes to Goblin Wood to trap a powerful human sorceress who is thought
to lead an army of enslaved goblins. By this time, Makenna has become
a strategist par excellence and the Hierarchy's greatest threat. Leavened
by humor and a dollop of romance, this well-crafted fantasy adventure
demonstrates Bell's talent for creating enduring characters and worlds.
It also has a cliffhanger ending that begs a sequel. The author of A
Matter of Profit (2001) comes through again. Sally Estes

Review: Slow Beginning, Otherwise Excellent Storytelling,
This is the story of a young hedgewitch named Makenna and a young knight
named Tobin. They are in the middle of the events that occur between
the humans and the goblins.
Makenna was a simple hedgewitch who joins with the goblins
after her mother is murdered by humans due to religious problems by
human leaders named priests. Though she has simple spells, her alliance
with the goblins who has their own set of spells makes great trouble
for the humans wanting to inhabit the woods occupied by the goblins.
Tobin is a knight who has been wrongly accused for treason.
Due to his family's background, he is spared death and is given a chance
to redeem himself by bringing in Makenna, who humans have come to believe
is an all-powerful sorceress.
It took me a very long time to get into this story. Probably
because the story starts in flashbacks and it frustrated me because
if it starts in flashbacks then maybe the story started at the wrong
time.
However, it got really good near the middle of the book.
What fascinated me the most was a discussion of where the Goblin's power
came from, hence where the Goblin's came from. Then it went on to discuss
how the Goblin power was evolving. I found that very thought out and
intriguing.
In the end, I found the book to be a fantastic and satisfying
read. I don't regret picking this book up at all. It isn't just a book
for young adults as fantasy lovers of all ages should enjoy this book.
Hilari Bell has written another book called "A Matter of Profit"
and I look forward to picking that book up as well sometime.
Review: Well-written, fast-paced, moving YA novel
not just for YA readers
This book kept me interested from start to finish and held up for adult
readers as well. Characters were believable. The plot was gripping.
The author didn't "cheat" the reader with any easy, pat solutions.
All in all, I'm now hooked on Bell and will be looking for more of her
work.
Review: A fun, entertaining read
Goblin Wood is about a hedgewitch named Makenna who fled to Goblin Wood
after seeing her mother's murder when she's twelve. There, she befriends
the goblins and becomes their leader. 5 years later a knight named Tobin
is accused of high treason. To reclaim his honor he must kill the evil
sorcccerous, Mekenna, who is driving people away from Goblin Wood in
magically painful ways. But, once he sets out on his quest he finds
that the goblins aren't evil and that Mekenna isn't the sorceress everyone
thinks she is. So, Tobin joins them after being held prisoner for many
days. Mekenna finds it hard to trust him. Even though the goblins have
developed a liking for him. Mekenns can't help but find she likes him
as well. But trouble isn't over yet for the preist that sent Tobin is
just gettign warmed up. Soon, they find themselves mixed up in a battle
of misunderstanding, honor, and trust.
Goblin Wood was amazing. Each character is important.
Mekenna is strong and capable. She knows what she wants and will do
anything to acheive it, a great quality in a heroine. The goblins add
humor, fun, and joy to the book. Tobin is the basis of the message and
helps keeps the story moving right along. There are no events that don't
tie into the end either. Plus, It is full of many battles and victories.
I enjoyed it most of all though because it was it had to do with fighting
from your heart instead of your head. It had a message in loyalty and
truth. I highly reccomend this book.
Review: A great book!
I loved this book. I can sympathize with Makenna, and with Tobin and
of course, the goblins.
This is one of the best books I have ever read, but the
ending left me wanting more.
Review: A GREAT Book!!!
This is one of my the best fantasy books i've every read(which is says
alot on my part!)I love how Ms./Mrs. Bell tells the story through the
eyes of the two main character. It makes hard to find the line between
whom is good and whom is evil, and those always make great stories.
Review: Fast Pace, intense rush!
Hilari Bell did an excellent job of creating a book that was fast paced
and witty. Once I started the book I could not put it down. If you are
looking for a good fanstasy story that will take you into a new world
this book is it! Enjoy!
Review: But what of the barbarians in the south?
When i first read THE GOBLIN WOOD, i adored it. I loved how there was
no right and wrong. THe plot is intersting and quick, besides being
funny. And there was no right and wrong(i realize i'm repeating).
But i have a tendancy to ponder books after i read them.
HIlari Bell may have tried hard to give the readers two grounds on which
to stand, goblin haters or goblin lovers, but everyone hates the barbarians.
But maybe she'll write a book about their point of view, so i'll have
to wait.
She really is a wonderful author though. Manneka blew
me away and i pitited her, but at the same time disliked her. After
being taught it's wrong to kill people,(and it is) it's hard to accept
a new belief, in which case I stand with Tobin.
I can find very litte to say sarcastic about this book
so i won't try.
If I don't like either road, Robert Frost, may I clear
my own?
-Quote taken from a friend's poem for school.
Review: The Goblin Wood
If you love stories with goblins, witches, and other magical creatures
than you will love this book. The book is about a girl named Makenna
whos mother is blamed for something she didn't do.Makenna takes revenge
on the folks after they kill her mother. After the revenge she heads
towards the goblin woods to live.On the way she captures a goblin and
they become friends.Years go by and now Makenna is 17.She has killed
a few people and lives in a village of goblins.A king decides to seen
a knight to capture her to move into the woods. The knight changes after
spending weeks as a captive. The knight frees her when she is caught. Then
together they make a portal to another world to live in peace.I hope
you will read this book cause it is the best.
Review: Gives reader a different view over goblins
This book is very good, and makes you think that goblins aren't that
bad! Most stories with goblins in them, usually give you the impression
that goblins are mean, clever, and nasty creatures. This book really
changes your mind. I shouldn't spoil the story, but it is GREAT!
Review: A different kind of Goblin fantasy
I can not say what exactly makes this book different from any fantasy
I've ever read. The description was vivid, even the tiniest details
of reaction/thought which are usually not mentioned in this kind of
story, can take you back to reality but somehow managed to keep your
environment with the goblins which sound a bit odd to you maybe but
it happened to me.
Maybe the way Ms. Bell building her character and situation
that was easily accepted and consistent throughout the book. The politics
reasons in conflict with the goblins' was so well developed that you
can not just say right or wrong about each side. This book really show
you how it was like to have something in the middle, when everything
has its own right and wrong. Yet all was told in not-so-flourish language.
Although I think the way out for the ending was a bit
too coincidental (because I feel it was too simple but again maybe I
wouldn't like it better any other way) , the last chapter brought a
lot more feeling to the whole story. My eyes just soaked a bit with
a big smile on my face after reading the last word.
What a gem. I simply love it :)
