Halloween tips for you and your pets.

1. Constant door ringing and loads of strangers at your door can be very stressful for pets. It's better to find a nice quiet room that is safe for your pet on Halloween night.

2. Halloween Candy: Some pets may enjoy candy and chocolate - but it really isn't good for them. Chocolate can be toxic for pets. Don't indulge them by sharing your trick or treat candy.

3. Keep all pets indoors on Halloween night. If you own a black cat please do not let it outside. They may be subject to cruelty or pranks. Often animal shelters will refuse to let black cats be adopted during the week of Halloween.

Common Sense Tips for Halloween Pet Costumes

1. If you dress your dog up in a halloween dog costume - don't leave him or her alone for their safety. There is a potential for serious trouble as they may be tempted to just eat their halloween costume - which can cause serious intestinal problems. Secondly, in the excitement of the night - they could potentially get hurt if their costume gets caught on something as they run about.

2. Watch out for Halloween pumpkins and candles. Obviously your pet could get seriously hurt, if they are wearing a pet costume and venture near an open flame.

There's the Scottish Terrier ("an earth dog used in hunting the fox and the brocke"), the Boston Terrier ("a lively, highly intelligent, smooth coated, short-headed, compactly built, short- tailed, well balanced dog"), or the Great Dane ("one of the most elegant and distinguished varieties of giant-type dog"). In fact, there are 146 AKC-recognized breeds profiled within the pages of the Complete Dog Book, and the pictures and text provide great bowser browsing. The breed descriptions help you choose among the hounds, terriers, toys, and working breeds, the herders, guard dogs, and sporting breeds. Measurements help determine which dogs will best fit your abode (Chesapeake Bay Retrievers measure 21 to 26 inches high at the shoulder, Chinese Cresteds are a mere 11 to 13 inches off the ground, while the Irish Wolfhound stands 30 to 32 inches tall), breed temperaments help you choose your ideal pet, and show criteria help you know what you're looking for when you actually start to shop for a pup. In the meantime, there are interesting stories about breed origins, and a useful glossary of dog terms, while the chapters on grooming, training, and Canine Health and First Aid will come in handy once you've brought your new dog home. --Stephanie Gold

From Affenpinschers to Yorkshire Terriers, with all the breeds and varieties in between, there is only one source for all the breed standards, all the canine sports and all you need to know about choosing, living with and enjoying purebred dogs. "If the dog owner can buy only one book, this has to be the one!" —The New York Times

I am a dog lover. This book is truly complete in many important ways. My library has this book available both in circulation and in the reference department. This unusual situation speaks well for this book.

This book details over 150 breeds with up to 5 pages of detail on each breed. Every dog owner should have this book handy especially if their dog interacts with any other breeds. My dog and I go to a nearby dog park where we interact with many other breeds.

If a prospective dog owner is studying to determine which breed of dog is best for them and their family this book should prove to be very valuable. Information in the book includes sections on history, training and health care. There are over 100 illustrations in full color.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I recommend this book to every novice who wants to learn about types of dogs able to compete in conformation shows as it gives the AKC official standard of each breed. However, this book needs to be updated very soon. There are at least 9 new breeds that have been added to the Amercian Kennel Club since this publication.

In general this is a great source of reference for the avid dog lover. But if you want to know about every dog breed in the universe, you should purchase and Encyclopedia of Dogs for this.

This book is a good reference for breeders and enthusiasts. It has the breed standards for all the AKC recognized breeds as of the publication date. It also goes into basic dog care. I would definitely recommend it to families still struggling with what breed to pick out. Check out the book, talk with your veterinarian then go to a dog show and talk with breeders and trainers.

Excellent book. You can find most of this information on their web site, but it's great to take to a dog show when you have questions about other breeds. Wonderful book. I always reference it.

In my opinion this is a nice book. I am very active in show dogs and the AKC, so this book suits me fine. However, some people may not be completely happy with it. For instance, if you want to know what breed of dog you should get, this is not the book to help you. Although it glosses over the history and care of each breed, you will need a lot more information if you want to decide which breed to get. Also, if you are not into purebred dogs or their standards, you probably wouldn't be interested in the book, maybe only the last section with dog care in it. Which brings me to this point: if you are looking for a book which teaches you how to care for your dog, this book only contains only the absolute basics, and you will need a much more detailed book to teach you thorough care. Another thing is, there are more than 400 breeds of dogs, and since the AKC recognizes around 150 of them, this book only gives you a small taste of all the breeds that are out there.

With that said, I truly enjoyed this book, and if you are none of the above, then I recommend this book to you!

My husband is a dog show judge and has been looking for this book. As always,

Amazon has what I need. This book is 2 yrs out of date, but this isn't Amazons' fault. Overall, the dog standards have not changed, except AKC has added some new breeds that aren't listed. Will be valuable with our breed (miniature Dachshunds).

Hey Irma! This is Halloween! (Paperback) - A Book about Dogs and Halloween

Book Description
Meet Hank and his dog, Irma. Irma is no ordinary dog. She thinks she's a real person. And so, on Halloween it seems only fair that Irma gets to dress up, too. As Hank gets ready to go trick-or-treating, Irma is not happy about being left out of the festivities...and she makes her feelings oh-so-clear. It seems Irma needs a costume, too...and a trick-or-treat bag as well. In big, expressive, comic illustrations, and text clearly rendered within speech balloons to draw reluctant readers into the action, Harriet Ziefert and Barry Gott introduce beginning readers to Hank and his puppy pal, Irma, in this first book in the "Hey Irma!" series.

About the Author
Harriet Ziefert is a well-known author who has written over one hundred books for children. When she is not writing, she commutes between her homes in Lincoln, Massachusetts and Maplewood, New Jersey. Barry Gott has been drawing ever since he ate his first crayon as a child. He left his job at American Greetings to illustrate children's books full-time. He lives and works in Ohio.

Totally Fun Things to Do with Your Dog (Play with Your Pet) (Paperback)

From School Library Journal
Grade 4-7-As the introduction states, "This book is about having fun with your pet, not pet care or training." For first-time owners, however, it does provide some of the basics of choosing a dog and keeping it healthy and happy. Whether readers want to jog with their dog, play ball, or enter shows, this title gives advice on how to do so. The clear, step-by-step instructions on training, safety tips, and many other informative, often humorous tidbits, result in a lively read. Dog bones border the top of each page, paw prints highlight each page number, and simple black-and-white cartoon drawings illustrate the text. This title stresses that owners should enjoy their pets and treat them kindly.

This book wasn't as helpful as I expected. Alot of it just common things that are generally practiced with experienced dog owners. It really didn't offer any new activities.

Good start for first time dog owners.

My seven year old son loves this book and has taught me, as the mother, quite a few things for training and playing with our new puppy. A wonderful and playful, yet sensile approach for children.

Great Book. Maybe not the best if you want basic training skills, but wonderful to teach your dog tricks. Not just for kids, but for anyone who wants to have fun with their dog!!! I highly recomend it.

This is a kids' book! Well guess what, I had somehow missed that vital bit of information. If I'd known, I would never have purchased Totally Fun Things to do With your Dog.

A Totally Cool Book!
This book is great! If you enjoy spending time with your dog, or want to, read this book. It has projects you can do with your dog. tricks you can teach. Fun games you can play. And exellent tips. I got this book, and i love it.

Animals bring out the goodness, humanity and optimism in people and speak directly to our souls. This joyous, inspiring and entertaining Chicken Soup collection relates the unique bonds between animals and the people whose lives they've changed. Packed with celebrity pet-lore, Chicken Soup for the Soul relates the unconditional love, loyalty, courage and companionship that only animals possess. Just like our furry, feathered and four-legged friends, this enchanting book will bring a smile to any pet lover's face ... and it's housebroken!

Most of the series of 'Chicken Soup for the Soul' has the kind of warm and fuzzy story that many find endearing and sweet. They are not 'deep' most of the time, but do point to things beyond themselves; for my own use, I often find sermon illustrations and stories within the pages of volumes of Chicken Soup -- as chaplain at a retirement centre, many of the stories help people to recall happier times, and help them deal with their present situation.

This particular volume involves stories with animals. The relationship between animals and people of all ages can make for some of the funniest, most heart-warming, most sad, and most meaningful stories. There are contributing authors of some note (Barbara Bush, James Herriot, Jimmy Stewart, Gilda Radner, Art Linkletter) among other authors who had stories to tell and volunteered them. Much in the manner that Readers Digest accepts unsolicited stories from amateur authors, so does the Chicken Soup series. Often the most meaningful stories are those that happen to people who are not professional writers.

Few animals are left out here, as many animals have come to be companions with humans over the centuries. Dogs and cats feature prominently, as do horses and other farm animals, but there are also wolves, birds, dolphins, deer, wild turkeys, gorillas and even a Christmas mouse. The stories cover a wide range of topics, including pets as friends and healers, animals as rescuers and performers of other amazing feats, animals whose companionship meant a lot, and finally on the sadness and meaning of saying goodbye to an important family member.

Each of this stories can easily be read in a short time. This makes it a good source for 'falling-asleep reading', for use in public speaking and preaching opportunites, for shared reading-aloud times, and for simple enjoyment and entertainment. Many of the stories here are ones that stay with you; the story about the wild turkeys and the story of the Christmas mouse are stories I use again and again in my chaplaincy, and they are always appreciated.

The editors of the primary series 'Chicken Soup' are Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen; for purposes of this volume, they are joined by Marty Becker and Carol Kline, authors and animal-professionals in various capacities.

My cats give their paws-up to this!

Inspiring book that will make you laugh and cry!
Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul is a fantastic book for anyone who has a special place in his or her heart for animals. The book was made up of many different stories describing the special qualities that make our pets and furry friends unique. I rated this book a 5 because I found myself crying one minute and laughing the next. There are stories that will make you giggle, one in particular describes buffalo playing a game on ice. It made me realize that there are many things about animals that we don't understand- and never will. Who would have guessed that buffalo play games? The book also included stories that sent tears down my cheek. The story that stands out the most in my mind is a story about how far a mother cats goes to save her kittens. The love of the mother cat can relate to human mothers as well, they will do anything to protect their children. I believe that animals are fantastic teachers. One story in the book talks about how a gorilla helped to rescue an injured (human) boy after he fell into her area in the zoo. The author of that story explained that what is truly amazing about the gorilla is that she helped the boy without caring about recognition. She helped the boy because she wanted to, she didn't know that recognition was even a part of the act. That is exactly what us humans can learn from these animals. We need to help somebody because it's the thing to do, not because we want to be remembered as a hero.
I would recommend Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul for anyone who enjoys animals or just wants to read a book that make you warm and fuzzy inside. The stories in the book will show you exactly why pets are teachers, healers, heroes and friends. You will realize how special they really are.
Also check out Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul for stories about teenagers that will inspire you.

With chapters on amazing animals, love, companionship and saying good-bye, each page captures the unique life-enhancing bonds between animals and people. A very good book for any pet-lover. I recomend it for everyone.

This was a total diary of my life. It made me feel like hugging my dogs and not letting go. This book was so exciting I never wanted to put it down. Through good times and bad times pets always come through. It is easy for anyone to read and once you'll read it you will never put it down.

It's always a pleasure to find a book that is worth rereading a time or two, and this one definitely falls into that category. The book is a collection of true stories that explore the special bond between humans and their pets or, in some cases, their wild animal friends. Because each story is written by a different author, there is a great deal of variation in the writing styles and in the stories themselves, but almost every story is touching in some way. A lot of the book did leave me in tears, but it was still such an enjoyable read that I finished the book in less than 24 hours. My only complaint is that I felt too many of the stories focused on death or ended in death. Our pets lead such short lives, and I would have preferred a few more humorous or heroic tales.
Some of my favorite stories in the collection:

"Delayed Delivery" is the story of an elderly widow who is spending her first Christmas alone, until she becomes the recipient of a very special gift.

"Turkeys" is an amusing little story that is worth sharing. A young girl, sick with the measles and a high fever, wakes up to discover that her bed is full of baby turkeys. Is she dreaming?

"Doctola" is the only story in the collection that actually sent shivers down my spine. A young vet, working as a Peace Corps volunteer in Africa, is able to save the lives of two puppies. He is assured by the local "medicine man" the puppies will some day repay him, and they do, in a manner that left me both thoughtful and spooked.

"Babblers Anonymous" is the story that I could relate to more than any other. It's a short and humorous look at a sensible woman who is determined to treat her cat with the dignity he deservers, and to never ever be caught in the "baby talk" trap.

Enjoy!

This book is a really good book at a fabulous price. Some people may think that 7.99 is alot, but at other bookstores it can be as much as 15 dollars! In this book there are a couple catergories: 1. On Love, 2. Pets As Teachers 3. Pets As Healers, 4. Celebrating the Bond 5. Amazing Animals 5.On Companionship and 6. Saying Good-bye. They have a bunch of stories for each chapter. The stories are true, and it makes you stop and think about how much animals help us through diffucult times in life. I thought the last chapter was hardest to read because it's sad. But it shows you that you have to face the truth sometime, no matter how much you don't want to. I recommend this book to anyone who has ever experienced the love and healing power of animals.

Being a true pet lover, I found this book to be absolutely magnificent. The heartwarming collection of stories exemplify the loyalty and love of animals. In this book, you'll read touching stories about how our healers, teachers, friends, and heroes are often our pets! After reading these real-life tales, I began to realize how much my own pet (a Quarter Horse mare) meant to me. I guarantee that after reading "Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul," you will begin to see your furry friends in a whole new light. I highly recommend this astounding book to any pet lover!

This book was super! One of the many reasons I liked it was because it is a collection of many short stories about pets. They will make you laugh, cry, and think about pets in a way in which you never have before. These stories touched my heart, and I think every cat or dog or animal lover in the world should have this book.

Reviewer: "rjgrib" (Deltona, FL United States) - See all my reviews
Anyone who truly loves their pet will be deeply moved and touched by these stories. There is inspiration, joy, love, and sadness in these pages, but they all reflect the wonders of our pets and how fortunate we are to have them. Some people don't understand how and why I treat my pets so lovingly and consider them my family. The biker cliche is appropriate here; "If I have to explain, you wouldn't understand." Also, my own personal philosophy applies; "I never met anything on four legs I didn't like. I can't say the same for two legs."

From reading the other reviews, I guess there may be heartwarming stories in the book - but the first one I read was the last. I recently had to put to sleep my aged little dog, my best friend, and upon purchasing the book turned to a chapter I thought might help. It was ghastly, an ode to irresponsible pet ownership from the beginning to the end. The dog's 10 yr old mother is impregnated unknownst to owners who discover this little fact only when she's giving birth; the dog loses a leg due to an accident while roaming at large; and finally, his agonizing death from an attack by another dog - again because he is allowed to roam at large, guess the owners are REAL slow learners - it was an awful thing to read, this poor dog suffered so unnecessarily at the hands of these people. I was going to throw the book away, but why should the publishers profit by this? I took it back to the bookstore and returned it.

THE OLDER I GET THE MORE I LIKE TREES, ROCKS, ANIMALS AND CLOUDS. TWM GROUNDED ME AGAIN, WITH MY HUMANITY, AS FRAGILE AS IT IS.
