Cowgirls: Commemorating
the Women of the West (Hardcover)
Book Description
Dave Stoecklein started photographing cowgirls for his
calendars fifteen years ago, always hoping that, one day, he would
be able to put together a book. That day finally arrived. In Cowgirls,
you will meet some of the most genuine and confident cowgirls
of today's American
West. The beautiful women in these photographs are working cowgirls;
all of them ride and are devoted to their horses.
About the Author
David R. Stoecklein
has worked closely with ranchers and cowboys from every Western
state. These friends have shared their generations-old culture
to help David document the West on film. Through his work, he
has gained a deep understanding of and respect for cowboys and
cowgirls. His quest to keep the spirit of the West alive is heartfelt
and uncompromising. David spends every free moment photographing
cowboys, cowgirls, and all elements of their lives, preserving
their heritage and traditions. David resides in Idaho with his
wife, Mary, and their three sons.
Review: Go Ahead--Indulge
Yourself
I'm not a big fan of coffee-table books, but Stoecklein's photographs
here are simply delightful. This compilation is a fine tribute
to the mythos of the cowgirl: earthy and erotic, rugged and romantic,
sexy and, above all, beautiful. The stuff, as Shakespeare would
say, that dreams are made of.
Review:
COWGIRLS RULE
I purchased this book after looking at it in a bookstore. The
authors' photpgraphy is amazing. Now I want all of his books!
This book makes me want to be a cowgirl when I grow up (I'm 42).
I have to say that I don't agree with one of the other reviewers'
comments, in that who WOULDN'T get gussied up if they knew they
were going to be photographed? I really don't think there is a
way to get permission from the subjects ahead of time and have
no way of tipping them off. Sure, I really don't think they all
wear satin western shirts everyday out on the range to work. But
why not have some fun? The book covers it all, the dirt, the glamour,
the muck, the glory and the beauty of being a strong, hardworking
female. Women are strong, but they can be feminine while being
so. I LOVE THE BOOK. There is something in there for everyone.
KUDOS to David Stoecklein, and please keep the great stuff coming!
Review:
Awesome!!
Being raised on a ranch in Nevada, and being a "cowgirl"
myself, I can tell you that this book represents the TRUE cowgirl
better than anything I have ever seen. Mr. Stoecklein has an eye
for beauty, and he knows what true ranch life is like, and he
has combined the two perfectly. These women are true blue ranch
women, not models who are made to look like ranch women. I know
this for a fact as I have competed against several of them and
am familiar with the ranches in the book. If you want a look at
beautiful women who are genuine Cowgirls, this is the book for
you. Thank you Mr. Stoecklein, for showing the rest of the world
the REAL cowgirls of the west. Great job!!
Review:
Oops
Hoping to experience cowgirls the way I'd experienced cowboys
in Stoecklein's other books, I eagerly purchased this title. Unfortunately,
though the photographs are excellently taken (like all of the
author's works), it left much to be desired for me. Most of the
women portrayed could be any random model who decided to deck
out in chaps and cowboy boots, and really, how many times do we
have to snap a shot of the back pockets of the cowgirl's jeans?
The poses don't seem natural to me and the women are made up way
too much for my tastes. Apparently photo shoot day was announced
ahead of time to these girls. There are a few exceptions. One
gal in Montana does indeed look like she just came in from rounding
up the cattle and the action photos of a bronc rider are amazing,
but these are few and far between. I was looking for a book that
showed the real nitty gritty of women in ranching and rodeo. If
you're looking for something like that try "Cowgirls - Women
of the American West" by Teresa Jordan, or "Cowgirls
- Contemporary Portraits of the American West" by Ronny Farley.
Review:
Look at this book!
I have to give this guy props on his photography. Most of the
images were with 35mm slide film and the quality of photographs
he took are really outstanding. The photographs are technically
about perfect and the women are also gorgeous. They're a different
kind of sensuous photographs that you don't see very often. Just
a really awesome picture portfolio!
Cowgirls: Women of the Wild West (Hardcover)
COWBOY AND INDIANS
Match their male cowboy counterparts these feisty women certainly
didroping calves; herding cattle; branding steer; trick riding
in the rodeo; even living up to the famous lyrics of Annie Get
Your Gun,Anything you can do, I can do better. Its no coincidence
that this timeless musical classic is all the rage on Broadway
again today, for as this new literary tribute shows, the contributions
of Americas cowgirls are boundless and brilliant. From the sad
end of the life of Ella Watson, to the splendor of the rodeo days
with Cowgirls of the 101 Ranch Wild West Show, to the Hollywood
Western sirens like Josie Sedwick and Barbara Stanwyck, COWGIRLS
is a visual feast, detailing the sagas of the Wests finest female
pioneers with many never-before published photographs.
The writing/photography team of Elizabeth Clair Flood and William
Manns, who also brought Cowboys & the Trappings of the Old
West to life, researched the history of these famous ladies for
five years, many times drawing on the rare collectibles of Western
aficionados across the country to illustrate the colorful history
of these women.
In addition to show casing famous
photographs of the daring ladies, Flood and Manns even highlight
the magnificent clothing and gear that evolved as rapidly as the
spirit of the cowgirls themselves, many times showing original
items side by side with historical photographs. Divided into six
chapters, COWGIRLS covers the migration of women out west and
the necessity for them to work the land and cattle, to the glory
days of rodeo and cowgirl images in Hollywood and works of art.
Floods writing is crisp and witty,
and Manns photographs are dazzling. Their passion for all that
is Western speaks to the adventurer in all of us throughout COWGIRLS,
and to the female spirit.
Book Description
This exciting journey into this slice of true Americana begins
with a foreword from Americas most beloved cowgirl, Dale Evans.
Illustrated with more than 450 color photographs and historic
images, COWGIRLS: Women of the Wild West pays tribute to the life
and legacy of the pioneer woman in the American West, who worked
on ranches, performed in Wild West shows, and competed in the
rodeo arena.
The cowgirl appeared on the American
frontier in the mid-1800s. She worked with stock alongside the
cowboy and was a determined and spirited pioneer. Rancher Lorraine
Plass, at age 87, epitomizes the cowgirl spirit: As long as the
colt stays under me Ill do all right. I will get the job done.
In COWGIRLS, the author and
photographer present the history of the cowgirl through a combination
of compelling tales, illustrations of their gear, western art,
and photography. In six chapters, COWGIRLS represents the years
between 1880 and 1950, which include the migration of women to
the West, the rodeo stars of the early twentieth century, the
cowgirl images created by Hollywood, and unusual poster art. This
colorful volume includes many photographs published for the first
time and highlights the evolution of innovative cowgirl fashions.
An important book for Western American collectors.
Review: Love Them Madly
This beautiful & astonishing book is an astonishing look at
America's horse latitudes & its women, the best out west.
Even better than the women of Cody's Wild West and the 101 are
rodeo riders like Tillie Baldwin, a Viking princess with the heart
of a Viking warrior in boots & chaps. The photo of Baldwin's
Roman Ride at the Stampede in 1913 is worth every dollar &
dime of the books cost and justifies every hour of effort that
Elizabeth Flood spent in bringing her Cowgirls to publication.
Review: an amazing compilation
This book is the best ever compilation on the subject of women
in the old west, real working cowgirls, show girls, hollywood
cowgirls, etc. fabulous pictures and stories... this IS the best
reference book on this subject currently available...
my only complaint would be of a personal
nature, and that is I wish it had more on the bad girls of the
wild west era... they only elaborated on three, Calamity Jane,
Belle Star, and Pearl Hart.
Review: BEAUTIFUL BOOK !
Highly recommended! A perfect companion to Packing Iron and Cowboys.
A real visual treat. Should be required reading in our schools.
Buy it - you'll love it.
Review: Women's History
As I Haven't Known It.
Full of great pictures and stories of rebel girls and women who
wanted to go where their interests and talents took them. Brave
and daring with remarkable athletic skills these "gals"
were not only pioneer athletes, but genuine living liberated women.
Wish this was taught in the public school system.

of me wants to do something original, unique. I definitely could
never bring myself to buy those mass produced, plastic-masked
versions available in the stores. When I flipped through Suzanne
Singleton's book, my mind began to race with all the possiblities.
I found myself thinking, "Why didn't I think of that? This
is sooooooo clever!" Now my only problem is choosing which
